Lyrics – Sackcloth Saints

High in our fortress, disguised and once free
Suffered scars of bombardment by king’s decree
In a fortnight the legions of cross and fleur-de-lis
Will have raised up a garden of severed trees

The savagery of inquisitor and crown won’t bend our knees
We’ll descend by the side of the sackcloth saints
Swear the vows, complete the final rite

Twenty-one, the laymen turned to heresy
Recount the days of those that burned here
Twenty-one declined the path of sanctuary
And braved the flames and soldiers’ spurning cheers

Pray now, pray now, venerate the faithful
Our legacy is safe, to die another day

Fumes rise, the anger of flames is set free
But the murmur of prayer sooths our agony

The savagery of inquisitor and crown won’t bend our knees
We’ll burn by the side of the sackcloth saints
Walk the charred sacred pathway to the light
